Rev. William Foege Files 1936-1946.

This series comprises primarily records created by the Rev. William A. Foege in his position as chairman of the American Lutheran Church's (ALC) Mission Auxiliary (MA). The records are from 1936-1946 and contain handwritten and typewritten business correspondence, copies of MA meeting minutes, annual reports of MA work, and material pertaining to the New Guinea mission field. Pastor Foege is the primary author of correspondence in this series, but it also contains letters written to him, as well as copies of circular letters sent out by the MA. Subject matter includes the need for a publicity program for the auxiliary; discussions of which particular projects to support; ways to increase membership in the auxiliary and subscriptions to the two mission publications published by the auxiliary; and problems with obtaining subscription renewals from subscribers. There is one folder of correspondence specifically related to the Mission Stamps Project. This was a project in which members of the ALC saved used stamps and then donated them to the MA, who would in turn sell the stamps. Funds raised would be set aside for postwar reconstruction work in the New Guinea mission fields. Regarding the annual reports in this series, it is unclear for which body they were prepared or at which meeting they were presented. It is possible the reports were presented to annual Mission Auxiliary meetings, Board of Foreign Missions meetings, or at the ALC convention. Only a few reports contain any notation indicating where they were presented. It is also possible these reports were those that appeared in material published by the church prior to its conventions. Miscellaneous items are a variety of materials that include samples of subscription renewal forms, pamphlets about auxiliary work, information pertaining to mission films the auxiliary produced, and publicity material for a project to raise funds to replace New Guinea missionaries who lost their lives during active service.

The ALC met as a delegate body biennially in October, the time and place of which was determined by the president and Board of Trustees. All boards and standing committees sent their reports to the president at least sixty days before the convention, so that he could have them printed and sent to the delegates twenty days before the biennial meeting.
